Vancouver just locked up Zeev Buium for eight years at $9.38 million a year. It is exactly the kind of bet a rebuilding team should be making. He was the centrepiece coming back in the Quinn Hughes trade, so Vancouver needed him to become a real pillar, not just a body. He’ll only be 29 when this deal runs out, meaning the Canucks are buying his entire prime. And given his track record — top-12 pick, strong college numbers, decent flashes even on a struggling Vancouver roster last year — that’s a reasonable price to pay for a young defenceman with real top-pair upside.

The best part is how little risk is actually attached to this. Despite Laine being a proven 20-goal scorer, it sounds like Ottawa’s chances of signing him have basically sailed. According to insider Bruce Garrioch, Senators GM Steve Staios did talk to Laine’s camp about a deal. But the team’s apparently betting on Andre Burakovsky rediscovering his game instead of adding a bonus-heavy Laine contract. And with Toronto now maxed out at 50 contracts after signing Brendan Brisson, they are out of the running too.

That leaves a shrinking pool of suitors — Florida, Tampa, and Dallas are reportedly still interested. And there’s always a chance a surprise team jumps in late. Edmonton’s GM even hinted a PTO signing isn’t the worst idea given how many good names are still unsigned. Although Laine’s far from the only quality free agent still sitting out there. Could Huberdeau to Edmonton Actually Work for Both Sides?

Jonathan Huberdeau’s been a disaster in Calgary since that big Tkachuk trade. But there’s actually a version of this that makes sense for everyone. Edmonton takes him on at 50% retained salary, meaning he’d cost about $5.25 million instead of $10.5 million. At that price, a proven 50-point winger fits perfectly into Edmonton’s second line. They have been thin behind McDavid, Draisaitl, and Hyman.
