Account Hilariously Trolls Oilers’ Babcock After EA NHL 27 Screenshot Surfaces
Following a scnreenshot of the new Oilers coach in a video game, Mike Babcock is already the brunt of jokes online. This one is pretty funny.
You can tell it might be a long season for new Edmonton Oilers head coach Mike Babcock. Games haven’t even begun and fans are starting to troll this bench boss about his past and his hiring in Edmonton, where the Oilers are hoping some of his past ways might actually benefit them.
The latest troll comes as a screenshot of Babcock from the new EA Sports NHL 27 game surfaced online. He’s seen behind the Oilers’ bench, as Daily Faceoff Edmonton captioned the image: “Mike Babcock is officially in NHL 27.” It didn’t take long for someone to chime in and make a joke.
Scott Billeck, who covers the Winnipeg Jets and is a member of PHWA, responded, “If you press ↑↑↓↓←→←→ B A Start, Babcock will ask to see your phone.”
The reference, of course, is in regard to Babcock’s being let go by the Columbus Blue Jackets after asking to see summer photos of the players and their families by looking through their cell phones. At the time, some of the players didn’t care, but others found it uncomfortably weird. It became such a problem that the Blue Jackets and Babcock parted ways before he ever coached a single game for the team. Babcock said during his intro media conference in Edmonton that he told his wife it was time to go when he didn’t feel the Blue Jackets organization had his back. However, the NHL effectively removed him, only approving his return to the league this summer.

Games also know the reference is also about secret codes you can punch in to get certain players and characters to do their special moves in video games. Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, right… is a pretty common move on a controller to active a hidden feature. In this case, that feature is Babcock doing the type of stuff that got him in hot water. Obviously, it’s not an accurate moveset players can do to unlock such an action, but a joke meant to poke fun at a coach who is going to have a lot of eyeballs on him this season.
