NHL Trade Talk Recap: Canadiens, Oilers & Maple Leafs’ Future in Net?
Lane Hutson silences critics, Oilers reveal intriguing summer names, and Leafs goalie Artur Akhtyamov faces his next challenge.
In today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap (July 25, 2026), we’re covering three different stories that all share a similar theme: “good news, but now what?” Whether it’s the Canadiens’ Lane Hutson flipping the script in the playoffs, the Oilers’ summer gathering giving fans a peek at who might be moving up the group, or Artur Akhtyamov’s Calder Cup run creating questions about how the Maple Leafs plan to use him when the pressure spikes.

Pronger’s “Water Bug” Take Feels Different After the Playoffs
Chris Pronger wasn’t exactly subtle about Lane Hutson earlier this season. He basically compared him to a “water bug.” He thought Hutson was super fast and energetic, but sometimes lacking clear direction. The concern was that he was flashy and always moving, but not yet purposeful or structured.
Then the playoffs happened, and it looked totally different. Hutson didn’t just handle the pressure; he helped push Montreal deep into the spring, with 16 points in 19 games. He had a far bigger impact on offence than most would have imagined. That “busy” game turned into real pressure and playmaking when it counted most. Now Montreal is locking him up with an eight-year, $70.8 million deal, basically betting on the playoff version as the future.
For Hutson: Now comes the question: can he sustain it?

Lauren McDavid’s Oilers Summer Party Photo: Who’s in the Mix?
Lauren McDavid put together a summer hangout dinner for a bunch of the Edmonton Oilers guys and their partners. Among those at the gathering were Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Evan Bouchard, Isaac Howard, Matt Savoie, Colton Dach, Jason Dickinson, and Ryan Shea, and they even took some pics together. [See one in the post.]
Fans are basically reading into it as a “who’s really plugged in” kind of moment. The Draisaitl–McDavid–Bouchard crew is a given, and it’s also a good sign that guys like Shea are already around the team. Howard and Dach are the big intrigue points. Howard especially could be in line for a bigger role next year, while Dach feels like that bottom-six “energy/heartbeat” player the team really values. And just to keep it real, not everyone being there doesn’t automatically mean anything bad. It’s often just travel, timing, and families being involved.
For the Oilers: Now comes the question: who earns a bigger role?

Akhtyamov’s Calder Cup Breakout: Now the Real Test Starts
Artur Akhtyamov’s Calder Cup run was the kind of goalie performance that makes everyone instantly go, “could this be the next big Leafs goalie?” And that’s when the question changes from “can he do it?” to “what exactly are you going to ask him to do next?” Toronto (like any Cup-chasing team) has to balance winning now with developing a young goalie the right way.
The tricky part is being good might only be the beginning. The NHL will demand steadiness, the ability to handle more shots and bigger moments, and the maturity to stay calm when things don’t go perfectly. The best-case scenario is the Maple Leafs give him a clear, safe runway. That would include reliable starts, mentorship, and controlled stretches. The goal is to help him keep growing without everything riding on him every night.
For Akhtyamov: Now comes the question: how quickly do the Maple Leafs trust him?
