NHL Rumors: Blackhawks, Red Wings, Oilers, More

In today’s NHL rumors and news, there was a trade on Sunday evening between the Red Wings and Canucks, news on Dylan Strome and the Blackhawks, plus concern in San Jose over Martin Jones.

In today’s NHL rumors and news update, there are reports coming out of Chicago that the Blackhawks are working on a deal for soon-to-be restricted free agent Dylan Strome. There was a trade completed between the Detroit Red Wings and Vancouver Canucks and why did the Edmonton Oilers pass on Josh Ho-Sang when it’s public knowledge the Oilers could use more talented wingers?

Blackhawks Working On Strome Deal

Charlie Roumeliotis of NBC Sports Chicago notes the Chicago Blackhawks have turned their attention to Dylan Strome now that Alex DeBrincat is signed. Strome is an RFA after this season and has performed extremely well since coming over from the Arizona Coyotes.

GM Stan Bowman said:

“Certainly that’s the next order of business. Whether we do it now or in a month or in six months, I can’t say at this point, but certainly that’s something we’ll take a look at.”

Strome weighed in on his contract situation as well:

“I think everyone’s different,” Strome said when asked if his second contract weighs on his mind. “Just not think about it too much. Obviously we’re getting paid to play this game and it’s a privilege, so go out there and try to have fun every day and win for our team. When the team does well usually individuals do well so I think you just got to look at it that way. Hopefully this team can make the playoffs and I think everything will work itself out.”

Red Wings and Canucks Make a Trade

You don’t often hear about NHL trades happening late in the evening hours but the Vancouver Canucks and Detroit Red Wings made a deal and more than a few people were surprised when their phones altered them of the news late into Sunday evening.

The Red Wings organization put out the announcement that they had acquired veteran defenseman Alex Biega from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Red Wings prospect David Pope.

Biega failed to make the Canucks roster out of camp and cleared waivers earlier this month. Should the Red Wings choose to do so, Biega can be assigned directly to the AHL.

According to Canucks GM Jim Benning on Biega:

“I drafted Alex when I was in Buffalo, so we go way back. He was good for our younger players to do the work and I gave him my word that we were moving on from him, but if I could find a spot in the league for him, I would try to work that out.”

Why Oilers Passed on Josh Ho-Sang

Kurt Leavins of The Edmonton Journal reports that he believes the Oilers didn’t pick up forward Josh Ho-Sang off of waivers because he’s not a guaranteed top-six forward.

Sharks to Seek Goaltending Help?

In two games the San Jose Sharks have lost twice but more concerning is how poorly Martin Jones has been in net. Jones has given up eight goals in 100 minutes of action.

The Sharks may call upon Aaron Dell to become a starter and if he can’t, the Sharks may have to look outside the organization.
