New York Rangers Fire GM Jeff Gorton and Pres. John Davidson, Hire Drury

The New York Rangers have fired GM Jeff Gorton and President John Davidson and brought in Chris Drury. Interesting timing.

Per Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, The Rangers have fired President John Davidson and General Manager Jeff Gorton. A poor season that will see the Rangers not in the playoffs this year, speculation is that there could a be lot more to this story than meets the eye, but inside reports suggest these releases had nothing to do with the statements made by the organization in respect to forward Tom Wilson and his not being suspended.

Friedman went on to say:

Like many of you, I assume this had to do with the events of the past 48 hours. I don’t believe Davidson/Gorton had anything to do with last night’s NYR statement; it was Dolan-driven. However, there is word Dolan was unhappy with this NYR season and wanted to make a change. Seems crazy to me, because they have a come a long, long way in two years…but he’s the owner.

Greg Wyshynski of ESPN said: ‘I’ve asked around and around and around, and I’ve gotten the same answer: Rangers’ firing of Gorton and Davidson is not Wilson statement related. It’s performance based, and decision was made before today.” Either way, this is certainly interesting timing with only three games remaining in the season. Why not wait out the year and make the move after the team’s final game?

He has made many moves as the General Manager of the Rangers by bringing in players such as Artemi Panarin, Adam Fox, Ryan Strome and Mika Zibanejad. He also most recently selected Alexis Lafreniere with the 2020 1st Overall Draft Pick. Gorton has also brought in current Head Coach David Quinn.

President John Davidson was hired by the Rangers Ownership in 2019. Davidson was also the President of Hockey Operations in Columbus from 2012-2019.

The Rangers were just recently eliminated from the Playoff race after a loss to the Washington Capitals. They currently sit with a record of 26-21-6. They rank 16th in xGF/60 and 18th in xGA/60. The Rangers were also on a three game losing streak with two losses to the Islanders and the infamous loss to the Washington Capitals.

Assistant General Manager Chris Drury Takes Over

Chris Drury will now take the reigns as the Team President and General Manager.

Drury has been the Assistant General Manager for the last 5 seasons. He will now have to decide what to do with Current Head Coach David Quinn. Drury was also a player for the Rangers for 4 seasons and was captain of all those teams. After he retired he went straight to Player Development with the Rangers and then became General Manager of the Hartford Wolfpack and the Asst.GM of the Rangers.
