Nashville Predators Sign Filip Forsberg to 8-Yr Contract Extension
The Nashville Predators have signed Filip Forsberg to an eight-year, $70 million contract extension.
The Nashville Predators have finally gotten their biggest piece of offseason business done, signing a contract extension with dynamic forward Filip Forsberg. Dawn Davenport was the first to break the news, saying, “Filip Forsberg stays here in Nashville!” The eight-year, $70 million deal is now the second-largest contract on the books for the team, behind only Roman Josi’s $9.059 million per season.
This deal took a lot longer to get done than most probably wanted. The Predators were hesitant to get up to the $8.5 million per year mark, but Forsberg was holding steady, prepared to go to the free agency market on the 13th of July if necessary. Forsberg set career highs this past season registering 42 goals and 42 assists for 84 points in 69 games. He is the all-time leading scorer in franchise history.
GM David Poile always maintained that his priority was to sign Forsberg and keep him in Nashville, but there was also a point last season where the organization had considered trading him, prior to the club going on a hot streak and making it into the 2021-22 postseason.
The Predators are looking to stay in the playoff picture this season and have been busy. Outside of signing Forsberg, the team traded Luke Kunin to the San Jose Sharks and added Ryan McDonagh from the Tampa Bay Lightning in separate deals. They still have about $10 million in salary cap space to make other moves.
