McDavid Gets Away with Chicken Wing, NHL Fine Update

Connor McDavid delivered a chicken wing hit to Marcus Johansson in the game between the Oilers and Wild. Is he getting a fine?

As per Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravailli, “No fine expected for Oilers Connor McDavid elbow on Wild’s Marcus Johansson last night..” The hit went unpenalized in the game and while it wasn’t a swinging elbow or a blatant shot, it was clear McDavid got away with one.

The hit occurred as the two were skating near the blue line in the Oilers’ offensive zone. McDavid was running a bit of a screen for Leon Draisaitl when Johansson was coming to defend. Likely expecting more contact, McDavid stuck his elbow out and caught Johansson on the chin. Johansson went down and stayed down while the play around him continued for a good 10-20 more seconds.

Minnesota Wild coach John Hynes and defenceman Jake Middleton shared their thoughts on a play and Hynes was furious about the explanation he was given from the officials. He wouldn’t go into the details of the conversation with the ref, only that it was clear, that McDavid extended his elbow to clip Johansson, resulting in Johansson leaving the game. “I won’t get into it as it will only infuriate you as much as it infuriates me,’ he said. “It wasn’t good enough.”

Middleton said the non-call on McDavid in a 3-3 game that injured Johansson was “horse—-.” Says if that’s Ryan Hartman or Marcus Foligno, you know what would happen. “I don’t care if it’s the best player in the world.”

McDavid Likely Got Away With One Here

It wasn’t expected that McDavid would be suspended or miss time. However, a fine wouldn’t have been surprising given that the league looks at plays like this, and the Wild would have definitely sent in the tape to have it reviewed.

Some wonder if the play isn’t being looked at more closely because of the argument that Johansson embellished the severity of the hit. He did leave the game, so the feeling is that it was severe enough to become a concern. That he dropped so dramatically and stayed down is drawing attention. Jason Strudwick of the Got Yer’ Back podcast called it embarrassing that Johnsson went down and stayed down like he did.

There was also an incident later in the game where Ryan Hartman slew-footed Leon Draisaitl, but that was not called either.
