Matthews Makes Leafs History, His Comments Could Calm Trade Noise

Auston Matthews’ comments on the historic milestone may pause trade noise involving his future with the Maple Leafs.

Auston Matthews set a milestone on Saturday night that will etch his name in Toronto Maple Leafs history. Breaking the Toronto Maple Leafs’ all-time goal-scoring record, he spoke after the game about the honor of being in the same conversation as some of the franchise’s greats. In doing so, he also delivered comments that — intentionally or not — may help cool the growing trade speculation surrounding his future in Toronto.

Speaking with reporters, Matthews noted, “You know… it’s a very historical franchise, and I take a lot of pride in putting on the jersey every day. To be mentioned in the same sentence as some of the greats that have come before us… it means a lot.” For a player at the center of recent rumblings, it sounded like someone fully engaged with where he is — not someone preparing an exit.

He added, “It’s extremely special, I’m very humbled… and I couldn’t do it without the great group of guys around me. It just means a lot.”

That context matters, especially after respected journalist and radio host Jason Gregor suggested Matthews may not be “loving life in Toronto.” Gregor wasn’t suggesting there had been a formal trade request. However, talk was that the struggles on the team and the pressure mounting on Matthews was becoming a bit much.

Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has since confirmed Matthews has not asked to be moved.

Toronto is an unforgiving market. The expectations never ease, the scrutiny never fades, and playoff failure is magnified more than anywhere else in the league. Matthews has already accomplished everything individually — scoring titles, league-wide recognition, now franchise history — but postseason success remains the missing piece.

The fact that the team hasn’t won and fingers are now being pointed in his direction, it’s understandable if fatigue is setting in. The weight of being the face of a team under constant consternation is heavy.

For now, though, Matthews’ own words may matter more than any worry or angst fans were starting to feel. He’s proud to be a Maple Leafs and he’s honored to have accomplished what he has.

What he said on Saturday won’t erase long-term questions, but they may buy the Maple Leafs something they haven’t had in weeks: a temporary pause in the noise.
