Mark Scheifele Goes Down In Game 1 With Injury

Early in the Calgary Flames vs. Winnipeg Jets game, Mark Scheifele went down with an injury.

Well, the nastiness in the playoffs has begun. Early in the Calgary Flames vs. Winnipeg Jets game, Mark Scheifele went down with an injury. He headed down the tunnel and didn’t return. There is no update as to how serious the injury is.

Five minutes into the game, Matthew Tkachuk went for a hit on Scheifele and both went a bit awkwardly into the boards, with Tkachuk’s skate coming up and into Scheiefele’s leg. He had to be helped off the ice.

It led to a fight later in the game between Blake Wheeler and Tkachuk, the former taking issue with the hit.

It is not immediately clear if the contact or Tkachuk’s skate blade was responsible for the injury but if Sheifele is out for any length of time, this is awful news for the Jets.

He didn’t put any weight on his leg while leaving the ice so it doesn’t look good. Also not helpful, the NHL is not allowing injury updates during the COVID-19 pandemic, thus we may not get a good indication of how serious the injury is, or when he might return.

As Ken Wiebe wrote on Twitter:

The Mark Scheifele injury is a perfect example of the prospective rule @FriedgeHNIC suggested earlier this year that would allow one of the healthy scratches to enter the game.
