Maple Leafs Trade Travis Dermott to Canucks for Third-Round Pick

The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded defenseman Travis Dermott to the Vancouver Canucks for a third-round draft pick.

According to reports, the Vancouver Canucks have acquired Travis Dermott from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a third-round pick. The two-way defenseman was rumored as someone that was going to be moved out of Toronto prior to the NHL Trade Deadline. While he has a consistent track record of two-offensive and defensive underlying numbers, he never quite found a home with the Maple Leafs.

The Maple Leafs posted on their social media accounts, “We’ve acquired Winnipeg’s third-round selection in the 2022 NHL Draft from Vancouver in exchange for defenceman Travis Dermott.”

There was some belief Dermott might have been included in the reported Mark Giordano trade with Seattle, and with no official word coming from the NHL on that trade, that Dermott was moved in a separate deal means he was not, or this deal needed to be done first to clear the proper cap room to fit Giordano in.

For the Canucks, they are essentially swapping Travis Hamonic out — they traded him to Ottawa earlier on Sunday — for Dermott. Both are left-shots who can play the right side. The Canucks spend less to have Dermott on the roster, so this is a cap move for them as well.
