Maple Leafs Give Up Future Considerations in Trade for Carter Hutton

The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired some goaltending depth in the form of Carter Hutton. They traded future considerations for him.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have made another trade with the Arizona Coyotes, this time acquiring a goaltender. The Maple Leafs have added Carter Hutton in exchange for future considerations. Hutton just cleared waivers and can be sent straight to the AHL, which is likely where the netminder will go. He is on an expiring contract making the league minimum ($750,000).

Hutton posted a 7.76 goals-against average (GAA) and a .741 SV% in three games with the Coyotes this season. Clearly, his numbers are a result of playing for a very bad team, and he’s posted much better numbers on stronger clubs. That said, it’s been some time since he played with a contender, as he’s spent the last few seasons with the Coyotes and the Buffalo Sabres.

In Arizona, this move is essentially the Coyotes getting rid of a contract. They have goalies Scott Wedgewood and rookie Karel Vejmelka taking the reins and Hutton became expendable. The Coyotes likely preferred to have the option of adding player contracts in other deadline trades where they could get a sweetener for taking on a player with salary.

This also represents a trade for the Maple Leafs where they can add a player that doesn’t need to clear waivers. The Leafs have tried that a few times this season, often having their players claimed by other teams. Hutton can play with the Toronto Marlies and be an immediate help.

The Maple Leafs currently have Jack Campell, Petr Mrazek, and Joseph Woll in their system. Hutton is simply more depth.
