Maple Leafs Sign Mark Giordano to Insanely Low 2-Yr Contract Extension

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defenseman Mark Giordano to a two-year contract extension, the team announced on Sunday.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defenseman Mark Giordano to a two-year contract extension, the team announced on Sunday. An NHL Trade Deadline acquisition this past season, Giordano was slated to become a UFA, but the Maple Leafs have decided they’d rather not let him test the market.

The deal will see Giordano, 38, make an average annual value of the contract is $800,000. This is absolutely a steal for the Maple Leafs who will get the veteran defenseman at the near league minimum. This is a hometown discount and evidence that he clearly wants to finish his career in Toronto. He noted on Tuesday about playing in Toronto: “Everyone knows I’m from Toronto, I love it here. I’ve loved my time here.”

For the Leafs, they get a chance to keep someone on their roster whose minutes won’t be outrageous but still has something in the tank. He played 20 minutes a night last year and had very good numbers for the Leafs. And, that he’s signed for such a low number will allow them to take care of other business without potentially having to break up the core of their roster to sign other players.

Projected possible salaries for Giordano ranged anywhere from $2 million – $5 million per season on the open market. This past season saw him split time with the Seattle Kraken and Toronto Maple Leafs where he combined to score eight goals, 27 assists, and 35 points in 75 games played.

Great signing when he could have gone several other places at 4-5x the amount. Believes in this team and how close they are and what he can bring. No doubt he was also given assurances as to where they see him slotting in. It won’t be as the #7.
