Maple Leafs Post Video Teaser About Another Possible Signing

The Toronto Maple Leafs posted a video of a James van Riemsdyk (JVR) goal. Why? Are they teasing something?

The Toronto Maple Leafs posted an interesting video on Saturday, one that seems out of left field until you consider that it might be teasing a possible UFA contract on a veteran forward.

The Leafs posted a video of a James van Riemsdyk (JVR) goal. Why? Given he’s not a player on the team, and hasn’t been since 2017-28, it feels a bit out of place. That is, unless he’s returning. One follower asked, “Why are you showing an old video of JVR scoring?”

James van Riemsdyk remains unsigned this summer. He’s one of several UFA veterans without a contract. He last played for the Detroit Red Wings, posting 15 goals and 31 points in 72 games. He had 16 goals and 36 points in 71 games for the Columbus Blue Jackets the season prior. He can score, even in a depth role.

Just look at the video. It took him all of a few seconds to capitalize when he had the opportunity. The Leafs could certainly use that kind of offensive weapon who understands his role and is willing to play wherever and whenever needed.

Another fan wrote, “I am all for bringing JVR back. I wouldn’t expect him to put up 20 goals and 50 points, but give me a guy that will stand in front of the net and get those dirty gritty goals. Paul another example. Rotate JVR in with Matthews a couple shifts every game and maybe he does hit 20…”

There Might Be Nothing To This

Nick Alberga wrote, “For those wondering, no, this doesn’t mean the Leafs have signed JVR. Nothing to it.” Another fan added, “…they’re posting memories. Thats it. That’s all.”

Understandably, at 37, he’s not exactly everyone’s first choice. While it’s likely he produces, there’s also a good chance his output hits a wall as he ages. That means the best bet is a one-year deal or a PTO, on a really team-friendly AAV. This is a player who has 82 playoff games of experience. On the right deal, he could be a solid addition.

Are the Maple Leafs trying to suggest they’ve found the right deal?
