Maple Leafs’ McCabe Talks Experience with Keefe and “Bad Blood”

Ex-Toronto Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe has a fan in Jake McCabe. How does McCabe see the former Maple Leafs Keefe as his teacher?

As Jake McCabe got ready to slot back into the Toronto Maple Leafs lineup, he was asked about former head coach Sheldon Keefe‘s impact on his game during an interview. McCabe liked playing for Keefe and took several moments to speak well of his former coach. When asked what kind of reception Keefe should get from Toronto fans, McCabe said, “Obviously not a negative one” and noted there was no bad blood from anyone, despite a lack of playoff success.

Ahead of Keefe getting a tribute video from the Maple Leafs on Thursday, McCabe praised Keefe’s strategic insights. He talked about how Keefe helped him develop offensive plays better and break down opposing teams. His comments shared what he believed were Keefe’s lasting impacts on the team.

Keefe’s Impact on McCabe’s Game

McCabe credited Keefe with expanding his understanding of the offensive side of the game. Under Keefe, the blueliner learned how crucial gaining middle ice was for breaking down opposing defenses and how to prepare for games effectively.

Keefe’s detailed systems allowed McCabe to become a more well-rounded player, and despite the team’s playoff shortcomings, McCabe confirmed there was no negativity or ill will directed at his former coach.

His comments suggest a deep respect for Keefe, a feeling shared by many on the Maple Leafs’ roster. Frankly, there are good reasons for the Leafs to have liked Keefe. He was statistically the most successful coach in Maple Leafs’ history. His leadership left a positive impression on the players and McCabe noted his experience under Keefe was entirely positive.

The Maple Leafs Are Moving Forward Under Berube

Keefe is happy now with the New Jersey Devils. GM Tom Fitzgerald credits Keefe for turning around that team’s fortunes. Meanwhile, the Leafs forge ahead with Craig Berube behind the bench.

As has been the case with most coaches, the Leafs are a strong regular-season team with ups and downs. Consistency is an issue, and the critique of this team is that they’re not necessarily built for playoff hockey. It was something Keefe took the fall for, and Berube is learning quickly how much having four-star players and getting the best out of the team every game is a challenge.

With critical games ahead and key players sidelined, the Leafs must rely on their depth and adaptability to stay atop the Atlantic Division. The Leafs lost John Tavares to an injury this week, something everyone on the roster will have to work around. McCabe said Tavares’ absence is a loss, but it gives other guys a chance to step up.
