Maple Leafs Learn Chris Tanev Could Be Out for Season
Chris Tanev’s injury could be season-ending, and the Toronto Maple Leafs don’t have any replacement for the defenseman.
The Toronto Maple Leafs could be without one of their most critical blue-line pieces as defenseman Chris Tanev could be out for the rest of the regular season.
For a player with multiple injuries and someone arguably unreliable when it comes to his body and future health worries, this is just another blow for an organization that potentially swung and missed on a big-ticket free agent signing. Tanev has played in just 11 games for the Maple Leafs this season.
According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, Tanev is set to meet with a surgeon this week to determine the next steps regarding a groin injury. If surgery is required, Tanev is expected to be sidelined until late April or early May, putting his availability for the remainder of the 2025-26 campaign and possibly the postseason in serious doubt.
Tanev returned to the lineup in late December, appearing in three games, but this injury is reportedly unrelated to his previous lower-body issue. Given the wear and tear Tanev has accumulated throughout his long NHL career, it’s an unfortunate but perhaps unsurprising development.
The timing couldn’t be worse for Toronto. The Eastern Conference playoff race is tight, and the Leafs’ margin for error is slim. Losing a veteran shutdown defender who has consistently delivered high-end, solid stay-at-home performances when healthy is a massive blow. Tanev’s presence, leadership, and ability to absorb tough minutes have been invaluable.

At this point, the priority may need to be Tanev’s long-term health. Whether that means shutting him down for the season or hoping for a late playoff return, the Leafs will need to adjust quickly — and possibly explore roster or cap-related options — as they navigate a critical stretch without one of their warriors.
