Maple Leafs’ Justin Holl Calls Jack Campbell’s Wink “Legendary”

In the middle of a highly-contested game to try to halt the team’s winning streak, Jack Campbell made a legendary move. What was it?

If you ask Justin Holl, Jack Campbell’s wink at him during the game was “legendary.” If you ask Jack Campbell, he didn’t even know he did it. As funny as it was, it wasn’t intentional.

In the video below, the Maple Leafs’ Campbell and Holl discuss Campbell’s “legendary” wink during their last game against the Calgary Flames. And, as you will see, Campbell said he didn’t even know it had happened until he saw it after the game.

Campbell Admits He Didn’t Even Know He Could Wink

According to a smiling Campbell, until he got home and saw the video online he didn’t even realize that he had winked at his Maple Leafs’ teammate. But as Campbell describes it, even during the games the players “always have a good time out there.” At the same time, he added the note that “we always have a good time going to battle together.”

Holl explained the situation to the media during the interview: he and his goalie had a “goalie exchange behind the net.” Specifically, Holl had called for the puck, but wanted it a “bit harder.” It was a bit of miscommunication between the two players.

Then Holl added to the explanation. He said that Campbell came around in front of the net, so Holl skated to him to say, “my bad.” That’s when Campbell “winked at me and then said my bad back.”

Holl Suggests that Campbell’s Relaxed and Animated Style Makes His Team Play Hard

Both saw the replay and thought the incident was really funny. Holl called it “legendary.” Campbell went on to say that he’s seen those Patrick Roy ones (winks) and some of the other iconic ones. His assessment was that he thought those other players probably meant to do it, but his was simply a natural reaction in the middle of a highly-contested game.

Marner Celebrates with Campbell after Recent Win

As Campbell noted, he didn’t even know he could wink and learned something new about himself every day.

Holl “blames” it on how relaxed Campbell is on the ice. Holl’s assessment is that “he’s having fun out there and … everyone knows that when you’re having fun that’s when you’re playing your best.”

As a skater in front of such an animated goalie, Holl notes that his emerging character is “fun to see” and the team is “just trying to play as well as we can in front of them.”
