Add Maple Leafs to List of Teams Interested in Jakob Chychrun

Nick Kypreos says the Toronto Maple Leafs are absolutely a team that would be interested in defenseman Jakob Chychrun.

According to Nick Kypreos, add the Toronto Maple Leafs to the list of teams that would be interested in trading for defenseman Jakob Chychrun. Kypreos notes while on Sportsnet 590 the Fan, “It’s come to my attention that the one guy that’s probably garnered more calls than any player out there right now. Believe it or not, is Jakob Chychrun from Arizona.”

These comments come not long after news broke that Chychrun might be available in a trade out of Arizona, but the price is astronomical. The player is extremely attractive for many teams, but the cost to acquire the player is an issue for some. Kyreos’ co-host Justin Bourne asks, “Who wouldn’t want that contract right now?” Kypreos responded, “Well, and I can tell you the Toronto Maple Leafs are one of them.”

He went on to explain that this is a player who logs 25 minutes a night and has scored around 30 goals in the last two years. If teams are arguing he’s not played as well this season, Kypreos calls this campaign a write-off from a Coyotes’ perspective when you look at their team and what’s happened to them. He notes that the big draw is his talent, that he’s 23 years of age, and has $4.6 million for three more years.

Jakob Chychrun trade rumors Arizona Coyotes

He adds:

“If you happen to make a deal with Arizona, you get this guy for four Stanley Cup tries at $4.6 million. When you see guys who are now, I think comparable at double the price at $8, $9 million a year, it’s easy to see JB why he is so attractive, including the Toronto Maple Leafs, at $4.6 million. They could make that work. That value of that contract is incredibly unique. So this one would garner the attention of a Jack Eichel. Four pieces.”

Can the Maple Leafs Give Up What Would Be Required?

It’s not clear what the ask would be from the Coyotes, only that the four pieces would have to include one or two high-level draft picks and top prospect and likely a proven NHL player. Do the Leafs have those pieces to give up and would they be willing to?

The team has no picks after the second round in the 2022 draft and it’s hard to know if they’d be willing to move one of the only two picks they have outside of that. It would take a first-rounder for sure. They do have all of their picks (outside of round 7) in the 2023 draft.
