Maple Leafs Have Traded For Nick Foligno [Report]

According to a report from TSN’s Frank Seravalli, the Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired forward Nick Foligno from the Columbus Blue Jackets.

According to a report from TSN’s Frank Seravalli and now confirmed by the organization, the Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired forward Nick Foligno from the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Leafs and Blue Jackets have used the San Jose Sharks to broker the deal and make the cap math work.

Elliotte Friedman has reported, “Toronto trades a first and two fourths for Nick Foligno and Stefan Noesen. Though SJ” In detail, the Maple Leafs get Foligno and Stefan Noesen. The Blue Jackets receive Toronto’s first-round pick in 2021 and a fourth-round pick in 2022. The Sharks receive Toronto’s fourth-round pick in 2021.

*CBJ and SJS each retained 50% of Foligno’s cap hit, meaning that Toronto is only charged $1,375,000.

Just days ago, Foligno said: “We’ll have a conversation if something does come up. It’s hard for me to say. I’ve not really been in this position. If there’s something that needs to be presented, we’ll talk. Otherwise, I’m just going to go about my business the way I always have.” He had a 10-team no-trade list and he didn’t have Toronto on it, or he had a conversation with the Blue Jackets about amending the list. He’ll need to go through a seven-day quarantine before joining the club.

As far back as a month ago, Steve Simmons wrote in a column:

Here is where it gets dicey. The Leafs have next to no salary cap room. In order to acquire anyone — the name Nick Foligno keeps popping up — they would have to move other assets and money, certainly Alex Kerfoot for example, maybe one of the young defencemen Rasmus Sandin or Timothy Liljegren, maybe the young sniper Nick Robertson, maybe an early-round draft pick.

It didn’t take moving a big piece. It just took some crafty salary cap work, a third team and some draft picks to get things done. The Leafs were rumored as a team that had interest and clearly, that interest was real.

Leafs GM Kyle Dubas told Pierre LeBrun on Tuesday: “… if we can do something that we think is going to be a good fit in the locker room and on the ice, I think we would still very openly explore that.’’ No doubt, Foligno will be a nice fit in the Toronto dressing room, a natural leader and could be the piece that adds the edge the Leafs really need.

LeBrun adds via text message from Nick Foligno: “Really excited for the opportunity ! Bittersweet with how much has been invested in Columbus, but a chance to win a Cup is all you can ask for and I truly feel it’s a great group in Toronto. Now the work begins.’’

More to come…
