The Toronto Maple Leafs have made their second massive trade on Sunday. The first was picking up Nick Foligno from the Columbus Blue Jackets. Their second was grabbing goaltender David Rittich from the Calgary Flames. Calgary retains 50% of David Rittich’s cap hit. He comes in at $1.375M.
The Leafs are sending a 2022 third-round selection back to Calgary.

Rittich spent the last five seasons in the Flames’ organization. It was clear he was about to be moved when the Flames played themselves out of a playoff spot. He is a pending UFA. He set career highs in the 2018-19 campaign with 27 wins and a .911 save percentage. He posted a 4-7-1 record and a .904 save percentage in 15 games this season.
This seems to suggest that the Maple Leafs don’t believe Frederik Andersen will be back before the end of the regular season and were concerned with his health. It is likely Rittich will back up Jack Campbell for the remainder of the season.
More to come…
