Los Angeles Kings Emerging As Favorites to Land Jakob Chychrun

The Los Angeles Kings are quickly emerging as one of the frontrunners to trade for defenseman Jakob Chychrun.

Jeff Marek noted during Saturday’s 32 Thoughts Now intermission report that the Ottawa Senators are no longer the favorites to land defenseman Jakob Chychrun from the Arizona Coyotes in a trade. While they are still in the running, reports are the Senators have deemed the price too high and are backing away from talks because they aren’t interested in giving up the top prospects the Coyotes want. Marek says he sees the Kings as a team worth keeping an eye on.

Marek at the intermission: “You look to other teams that have a deep prospect pool and maybe the need for someone like Jakob Chychrun, I think we are all starting to wonder more and more about the Los Angeles Kings”. He noted the ask for the blueliner is still high (equivalent 2 firsts plus prospects, picks and players). Ottawa s not looking to give up Shane Pinto, Ridly Grieg, or Jake Sanderson. At the same time, it’s hard to imagine the Kings being willing to give a king’s ransom (pun sort of intended) for the defenseman who has yet to suit up for the Coyotes and has health concerns, despite a nice contract over the next few seasons.

The Kings Would Need to Send Salary Back to Coyotes

What’s intriguing about the Kings is that they, like many other teams, are right up against the salary cap and using LTIR to stay under the ceiling. There’s no trade unless they move salary the other way. As for who the Coyotes would want off the Kings’ roster and what they’d be willing to take in salary back for a sweetener is yet to be determined and Marek didn’t provide much insight in that regard.

The Kings have been named in a few rumors to add a major piece as the club is being viewed by many as a club ready to take a big step and compete this season. The Kings are 3-4-0 to start the season.
