Lemieux, Crosby & Malkin: The Growing Penguins Legacy

Mario, Lemieux, Sidney, Crosby, and Evgeni Malkin are growing the Pittsburgh Penguins legacy. What have Crosby and Malkin done recently?

Pittsburgh Penguins Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin continue to carve their names deeper into NHL history. Their recent milestone performances remind us why they’re two of the greatest players in Penguins’ history and the NHL.

Monday Night, Crosby Put Up a Night of Records

In Monday night’s dominant 7-3 victory over the cross-state rivals the Philadelphia Flyers, Crosby achieved several historic feats. First, his goal and three assists gave him 1,033 career assists, tying him with Mario Lemieux for the most in Penguins history. Second, he tied Lemieux for the most three-point games in franchise history (183). Finally, with his 42nd career four-point game, Crosby tied Gilbert Perreault for the third-most four-point games in NHL history by a No. 1 overall draft pick. Only Lemieux (124) and Dale Hawerchuk (45) have more.

At 37 years old, Crosby remains as dynamic as ever. He’s following back-to-back 90-point seasons with what looks to be another. With 1,635 career points (602 goals, 1,033 assists), he’s second only to Lemieux in Penguins history in both goals and points.

Not to Forget Malkin’s Power-Play Dominance

Not to be outdone, Evgeni Malkin also hit a historic milestone during Monday’s game. With his assist on Michael Bunting’s first goal, Malkin became the third player in Penguins history to reach 500 career power-play points (180 goals, 320 assists), joining Lemieux (701) and Crosby (571) in this elite club.

Malkin has been productive this season with 29 points (seven goals, 22 assists) in 36 games. However, 11 of those points (two goals, nine assists) came in his first five games. While he’s no longer in his prime, his contributions remain invaluable, particularly on the power play. Still, he makes a difference for his team almost every night he laces up his skates.

Crosby and Malkin are building a legacy with the Penguins.

Together, Crosby and Malkin Are Building a Penguins’ Legacy

Together, Crosby and Malkin have built an unparalleled legacy in Pittsburgh. Their ability to maintain elite production and continuously rewrite the Penguins’ record books underscores their greatness. They’ve been doing this as teammates since they broke into the NHL.

While Lemieux’s shadow will forever loom large, Crosby and Malkin’s achievements place them alongside him as pillars of the Penguins franchise. As both players near the twilight of their careers, Penguins fans should consider themselves fortunate. They get to savor every milestone and every game that adds to their storied legacies.
