Leafs to Bench William Nylander for Being Late, Hyman Injury Update

William Nylander might see the press box Tuesday after being late to a meeting for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

According to a report by Elliotte Friedman, William Nylander might not see action Tuesday as the Toronto Maple Leafs take on the Vancouver Canucks. It’s not health related, but it appears Nylander was late for a team meeting and is being benched by coach Sheldon Keefe as a result.

This news comes just a day after Nylander returned to the Maple Leafs lineup and scored a goal in a stunning loss to the Canucks on Sunday night.

Mark Masters reported earlier in the day that when Leafs practice was underway Nylander was wearing a grey jersey, which is usually for extras. Pierre Engvall and Adam Brooks were in regular white sweaters and that it looked like Alex Kerfoot will skate as a top-six winger based on sweater colours. This may be how the Leafs go with the lineups Tuesday night.

There is a chance things could change, as Keefe said Nylander wasn’t going to play tomorrow because of his being late but that the decision will be reassessed ahead of the game.

Of course, this will spark all sorts of controversy around Nylander who, at times can be said to have some issues with maturity. It doesn’t help that this comes after a loss to a Canucks team that was ravaged by COVID and just back after a lengthy time away. Not too many fans in Leaf Nation are terribly happy right now.

Zach Hyman Injury News

Keefe also told reporters that Zach Hyman is expected to miss a minimum of two weeks after taking a knee-on-knee hit from Vancouver Canucks defenceman Alex Edler Sunday night. Edler was suspended two games by NHL Player Safety earlier on Monday and while talk was that maybe Hyman wouldn’t be out of action long, it appears the injury is severe enough to keep him off the roster for a little while.
