Leafs and Blackhawks Talking Salary Trade Ahead of NHL Deadline Day

The Maple Leafs and Blackhawks are talking about a potential deal that would see the Leafs send salary to Chicago ahead of Monday’s deadline.

According to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, watch for a potential deal between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Toronto Maple Leafs ahead of Monday’s NHL Trade Deadline. As the Maple Leafs look to move salary to make other moves, the Blackhawks are a team that could be open to adding salary in exchange for assets or sweeteners that will help their team rebuild long-term.

The Blackhawks have had a surprisingly decent season. That said, they have regressed to more of the team insiders and analysts thought they’d be at the start of the 2020-21 NHL campaign. As such, they are sellers, but also in a unique position to take on salary with so many players on long-term injured reserve. We already saw an example of that when they made a trade with the Florida Panthers earlier in the week.

LeBrun reports that Blackhawk’s GM Stan Bowman remains willing to leverage his salary cap space if cap-strapped teams need help moving money around. Specifically, Bowman has spoken to the Leafs about such a trade several times in recent weeks and there could be something pending. More than likely, if a deal is made, it would involve a third-party broker to get a trade done.

LeBrun suggests the San Jose Sharks and Detroit Red Wings are willing to do the same thing as Chicago so there could be room for the Leafs to shed some salary ahead of Monday’s deadline and add.

Any Chance the Leafs Are Thinking Taylor Hall?

There were some whispers that the Leafs might be lurking in the background on a Taylor Hall but Frank Seravalli reports the they are not one of the many teams inquiring on the forward. That said, they will continue to monitor what the price could be for the winger as Monday approaches.

Taylor Hall Sabres trade talk

The Leafs are still in the hunt for a bit of grit and sandpaper and a backup goaltender based on some injury concerns with Jack Campbell and Frederik Andersen. That seems like a more likely scenario than adding a massive salary like Hall’s, even as a rental. Darren Dreger added during the latest TSN Insider Trading segment that teams are talking to Hall’s agent about an extension before making a trade. If the deal is better for Buffalo to move Hall in a trade-and-sign scenario, Hall will not be in the discussion for the Leafs.
