Joe Thornton Signs With HC Davos

In preparation for the 2020-21 NHL season, Joe Thornton has signed in Switzerland with HC Davos in the Swiss NLA.

As reports surface that the Toronto Maple Leafs have reached out to veteran center Joe Thornton, Thornton had made news for another reason. In preparation for the 2020-21 NHL season, he has signed in Switzerland with HC Davos in the Swiss NLA.

This is not surprising news as he’s practiced with the team before and this is where Thornton spends his offseason family time. In fact, Thornton, who holds a Swiss passport, is considered a Swiss National and is signing will not count toward the foreign player limit.

The deal is open-ended, meaning he can leave at any time and join the NHL when the next season is set to resume or he signs a deal with an NHL club.

This deal represents the third time Thornton will have signed with Davos. In 2004-05 he spent the entire season there while the NHL was locked out. It was at that time he met his wife and he helped lead Davos to the league title. He was awarded the NLA MVP that season and led the Swiss club team to a Spengler Cup title. He also played there in 2012-13 when the league was dealing with another partial lockout.

What’s Next for Thornton?

Outside of a fluke injury, the plan still remains for Thornton to get playing time in, warmed up and ready for the NHL season while still looking for a new NHL team to call home.

He’s not yet signed and there is buzz he’ll either return to the San Jose Sharks or he could move on, the Maple Leafs rumored to be very interested. Until then, he will stay in Switzerland and get a head start on the rest of the NHL veterans until the NHL season is closer to returning.
