Jarome Iginla Opens Up About Serious Health Battle After Concerning Video

Jarome Iginla is dealing with serious health issues, details he shared in a recent interview after a concerning video surfaced.

Hockey Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla, 49, has revealed he is dealing with serious health problems. A recent video featuring Iggy posted by Amazon Prime sparked fan concerns about his voice and appearance. A story by Eric Francis at Sportsnet offers more details.

Speaking from his home in Lake Country, B.C., the former Calgary Flames captain said he has been experiencing neurological issues that he believes may stem from metal toxicity linked to his cobalt hip implant. “Some neurological issues. I’m not entirely sure what it is, it may be from metal toxins from reaction to the cobalt hip.”

Francis shared the story in a revealing article on Tuesday, noting that Iginla underwent hip replacement surgery a few years ago, and complications followed, along with medications that have affected his energy, weight, and speech.

Cobalt-chromium components in some artificial hips can release metal ions and debris into the bloodstream through wear or corrosion. Iginla also had high mercury levels, which he is working to lower while trying to determine whether they’re connected to the suspected cobalt poisoning. “I need more time to figure it all out, but I’m still hopeful that I will recover fully,” he said.

He has spent well over a year getting tests and consulting medical professionals. He says things are slowly coming under control.

Iginla remains the Flames’ all-time leader in games played, goals, and points, with 525 goals and 1,095 points in 1,219 games over 16 seasons. He led Calgary to Game 7 of the 2004 Stanley Cup Final, won two Olympic golds with Canada (including assisting Sidney Crosby’s 2010 golden goal), and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2020.

Everyone here wishes Iginla the best in his recovery and hopes this isn’t anything too concerning. His report that he’s improving is great news.
