Jacob Trouba Signs Four-Year Deal With San Jose Sharks
The San Jose Sharks have made another significant addition to their blue line, signing veteran defenseman Jacob Trouba to a four-year contract worth $8.25 million annually, according to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman.
Trouba arrives in San Jose after spending last season with the Anaheim Ducks, bringing a wealth of experience, physicality, and leadership to one of the NHL’s youngest rosters. A former captain of the New York Rangers, the 32-year-old has built a reputation as one of the league’s toughest defensemen while consistently logging heavy minutes in all situations.
For the Sharks, this move is about more than simply adding another veteran defenseman. San Jose has been actively searching for experienced blueliners to help stabilize its young roster, and Trouba checks many of those boxes. His leadership, defensive presence, and physical style should make him an important mentor for the organization’s emerging core.

The signing also raises questions about the Sharks’ pursuit of Darnell Nurse. San Jose has been linked to the Edmonton Oilers defenseman in recent weeks, with reports indicating the Sharks have expressed genuine interest in acquiring him. However, committing $8.25 million per season to Trouba significantly changes the financial picture. Unless general manager Mike Grier is willing to dedicate more than $17 million annually to two veteran left-side defensemen, landing Nurse now becomes considerably more difficult.
While San Jose could still remain in the mix if other roster moves are made, this signing appears to lessen the urgency to complete a blockbuster trade for Nurse. Edmonton has also remained firm in its asking price, reportedly unwilling to retain salary or take back undesirable contracts, making any potential deal even more challenging.
The Sharks have been among the NHL’s busiest teams this offseason, and while Trouba strengthens their blue line immediately, his arrival could ultimately signal that San Jose is pivoting away from being the front-runner for Nurse.
