Jacob Markstrom Trade Rumors Begin as Devils Gauge Interest
The New Jersey Devils could be preparing for another significant move this offseason.
According to NHL insider Kevin Weekes, the Devils are currently gauging market interest in veteran goaltender Jacob Markstrom, although no trade is considered imminent. The report suggests New Jersey’s new management group is exploring its options after a disappointing season from the 36-year-old netminder.
Markstrom just completed his second season with the Devils, posting a 23-19-1 record in 44 appearances. However, his numbers took a major step backward compared to the previous year. He finished the 2025-26 season with a 3.07 goals-against average and an .883 save percentage, both among the lowest marks of his career.
The decline came after a much stronger 2024-25 campaign when Markstrom recorded a 2.50 GAA and .900 save percentage in 49 games. That inconsistency appears to have opened the door for New Jersey to at least investigate what the market might look like.
Contract Could Complicate a Deal
While Markstrom remains a respected veteran with nearly 600 NHL games under his belt, moving him won’t necessarily be simple.
Beginning next season, the Swedish goaltender carries a $6 million cap hit for the next two years. He also owns a 20-team no-trade list, giving him significant control over where he could potentially be moved.
At 36 years old, some teams may hesitate to commit to a veteran goalie coming off one of the worst statistical seasons of his career. However, clubs looking for short-term stability in goal could still view Markstrom as an intriguing option.
Potential Landing Spots
Several teams around the league could make sense if the Devils decide to move forward with trade discussions.

Carolina Hurricanes
Carolina has long been linked to improving its goaltending depth. A veteran like Markstrom could provide another experienced option for a team that consistently expects to contend for the Stanley Cup.
Colorado Avalanche
The Avalanche remain in win-now mode and have shown a willingness to add veterans. If they seek additional security in net, Markstrom’s experience could be attractive.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Kyle Dubas has made it clear that maximizing Sidney Crosby’s remaining years remains the priority. With substantial cap flexibility available, Pittsburgh could absorb Markstrom’s contract while adding an experienced presence between the pipes.
Edmonton Oilers
Goaltending continues to be a topic surrounding Edmonton. If the Oilers believe Markstrom can rebound behind a stronger defensive structure, he could provide a veteran solution for a team desperate to capitalize on the Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl window.
Devils May Simply Be Doing Their Homework
At this stage, there is no indication that a trade is close. The Devils may simply be exploring every possible avenue before making decisions on their roster.
Still, when a team begins gauging interest in its starting goaltender, it naturally creates speculation.
Markstrom has enjoyed an impressive NHL career that includes Vezina Trophy consideration and several standout seasons in Vancouver and Calgary. The question now is whether New Jersey still believes he can return to that level—or whether another contender is willing to bet on a bounce-back season.
For now, the rumor mill has officially begun.
