Could Oilers Look Into Latest Goalie to Hit the Trade Market?
Will the Edmonton Oilers explore a move for Jacob Markstrom?
Until the Edmonton Oilers truly solve their longstanding woes in goal, any potential target who becomes available, whether via free agency or the trade market, is going to be connected to them.
The Tristan Jarry trade has been a disaster thus far, and Connor Ingram is set to hit free agency on July 1, so we very well could be approaching another summer of change between the pipes in Edmonton.
Because of the thin UFA market, we’ve already heard buzz about the Oilers dipping their toe into the trade waters, with Sebastian Cossa among those linked as options. On Saturday, a surprising new name emerged as a possibility: Jacob Markstrom, which begs the question — will the Oilers be in the mix for the veteran netminder?
Rob Ellis of NHL Trade Rumors wrote:
“When evaluating the NHL landscape, two intriguing destinations emerge: the Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers. For Edmonton, the Connor McDavid championship window demands absolute certainty. Even with Tristan Jarry in the mix as the starter, the Oilers’ front office knows that an established veteran like Markstrom can provide the 1A/1B stability needed for a grueling playoff run in the loaded Western Conference,”
The 36-year-old Markstrom’s two-year, $12 million contract extension signed with the Devils in October begins next season (2026-27). He went 23-19-1 last season while posting a 3.07 goals-against average and an .883 save percentage with one shutout in 43 starts.

Markstrom would come with quite a bit of risk given his age, contract, and performance in recent years. That said, those factors could also make him easier to acquire in a trade, and he still possesses the talent to bounce back and provide some reward.
It’s tough to imagine Edmonton wanting to commit $6 million annually to Markstrom over the next two seasons while also paying Jarry $5.375 million. However, if the Oilers are able to acquire him for cheap, or with some salary retention, it may be a move GM Stan Bowman explores.
