Insider: Canucks Tyler Myers Sitting Out to Consider Trade Offer
The Vancouver Canucks are reportedly fielding multiple calls on Tyler Myers, and a trade could be coming soon as the NHL deadline approaches.
Trade winds are beginning to swirl around the Vancouver Canucks blue line, and this feels like more than routine deadline chatter. According to NHL insider Kevin Weekes, the Canucks are “fielding plenty of calls” on defenseman Tyler Myers, and a move could be coming shortly.
Rick Dhaliwal reports, “I am told Tyler Myers is sitting tonight against Winnipeg for trade reasons.” Darren Dreger adds, “Rick is correct. The Canucks have a trade option they’ve asked Myers to consider. He has protection and is taking his time to consider. I’m told it was presented two days ago. The veteran and his agent, J.P Barry continue to deliberate.”
Myers is one of many names rumored to be a trade piece that could be leaving the Canucks. He’s interested in staying, but as the Canucks rebuild, there was undoubtedly plenty of interest in the blueliner.
The Canucks are in a tough spot—sitting near the bottom of the league standings post-Olympic break, they’re prioritizing moving pending unrestricted free agents (like Evander Kane) as part of a potential rebuild. While their main focus is on expiring contracts, they’re open to offers on players with term, including Myers.
At this stage of the season, “fielding” and “shortly” are relevant when it comes to his report. Teams do not make multiple calls on an experienced defenseman unless they are at least willing to entertain the possibility of making a deal happen. Myers, because of his size, length, and experience in playing high-minute roles, is the type of defenseman that contenders often seek in the lead-up to the trade deadline.
He’s 36 years old, carries a reasonable $3 million AAV cap hit. What’s interesting to see is who he felt comfortable considering in a trade. He has a full no-movement clause this season, meaning any trade requires his approval (it drops to a 12-team no-trade list next year).

For the Canucks, this could be an indication of an interesting change in direction, regardless of whether it is in terms of making room in the salary cap, reorganizing the blueline, or taking advantage of the value of Myers, but the groundwork does appear to be in place here, especially with the interest increasing leading up to the deadline.
