Matthews Will Be Back In Maple Leafs Lineup After Knee to the Head

Auston Matthews took a knee to the head in the game versus Carolina on Monday, but he’ll be back in the lineup Thursday vs. the Flames.

After taking a nasty knee to the head, there was some concern that Auston Matthews might have suffered a head injury and could miss some time for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The good news is that he was back on the ice with the team during Wednesday’s practice and reports are that he’ll be good to go against the Calgary Flames on Thursday.

Head coach Sheldon Keefe noted, that the team got word early that it likely wasn’t a serious head injury so everyone was in decent spirits knowing that Matthews had probably avoided something bad. Keefe said, “He came in today feeling pretty good so it’s a really good sign. Obviously, for his status in terms of practicing tomorrow, we’ll see how he comes in, but today was a very good day.” It was Matthews himself who said he figures he’ll be fine to play and wasn’t feeling any adverse effects from the hit.

Matthews says it was fortunate that it was nothing serious. He felt like he got hit in the side of the head pretty hard and wasn’t expecting it so he was a bit shaken up. But, he spoke with the medical staff, said he felt fine throughout the night and today and no one was worried about him making it to practice.

Matthews is having a great season with 31 goals and 53 points in 40 games for the Maple Leafs so far this season. Obviously, it’s welcome news that the hit was nothing serious. He is scoring at around a 70-goal pace and 122 points in an 82-game season. He is making a case to be an early favorite for the 2022 MVP. Not to mention, he’s doing all of this while drawing zero penalties and providing really solid defense.

Many articles say knee to the head but it wasn’t. Look at the replay close and you will see the player he fell into had his arm and glove in front of his leg and knee area. He steered Matthews down without hitting his knee. Now, Matthews may have hit his head on a hard part of the glove or else possibly scraped himself up on it but no knee involved.
