Henrik Lundqvist Drops Huge Hint About NHL Future

Henrik Lundqvist posted on social media Sunday that he still wants to win, teasing the idea he’ll enter the NHL free agent market.

If there was any doubt that Henrik Lundqvist might be hanging up his goalie pads after being bought out by the New York Rangers earlier this week, there isn’t any question as to his plans after a tweet on Sunday evening. Lundqvist isn’t finished with the NHL just yet.

The veteran goaltender wrote: “I still love to compete. I still love the game and I still want to WIN!”

This will lead to Lundqvist likely joining the NHL free agent market on October 9 and there will be all sorts of speculation as to where he’ll wind up as he likely picks a team that will give him a fantastic chance to win a Stanley Cup that has eluded him over a long and memorable career.

The first team that will top most lists will probably be the Washington Capitals as the Caps could use a solid backup for Ilya Samsonov if Braden Holtby leaves (which is expected). That said, there may be a few other openings as well and some teams that are looking to fill potential vacancies.

The 38-year-old owns a .910 save percentage and 3.05 goals-against average in 145 appearances over his last three campaigns. And, while his best performances are likely behind him, he’s still a capable netminder whose name alone will get teams calling.
