Sekera Signs 2-Yr Extension With Dallas Stars

The Dallas Stars have inked veteran defenseman Andrej Sekera to a two-year extension on Sunday. He’ll avoid NHL free agency as a result.

The Dallas Stars have inked veteran defenseman Andrej Sekera to a two-year extension on Sunday. The deal is worth $3 million over the course of those two seasons and shows that the Stars value Sekera as a depth defender on a Stanley Cup contending team.

Stars general manager Jim Nill has a tendency to sign veteran blueliners as insurance policies and Sekera definitely qualifies. The moves likely also hints that the Stars will stay out of the free agent market when it comes to defenseman starting October 9.

Sekera has seen his share of ups and downs over the past few seasons, dealing with injuries and being on the receiving end of a buyout from the Edmonton Oilers. He wound up in Dallas and has been a great fit for the team. While his regular season contributions weren’t anything to write home about, this was somewhat of a bounce-back season and once he got up to speed in Stars long playoff run, he started to show why he’s a valuable asset.

Stars GM Jim Nill said of the signing Sekera on Sunday:

“Andrej did an outstanding job coming in and immediately making a difference on our back end last season. With his intelligence and experience, we look forward to Andrej continuing to play an impactful role in our defense corps.”

Congratulations for Sekera for getting a deal done in an uncertain market and ahead of free agency opening.
