Golden Knights Owner Sets Record Straight on Pacioretty Trade Rumors

Vegas Golden Knights owner Bill Foley said don’t believe rumors about Max Pacioretty being shopped. But, does that mean he won’t be traded?

Is Max Pacioretty on the trade block or isn’t he? That’s one of the big questions in NHL circles this week after Frank Seravalli of TSN and a few other hockey reporters suggested the Golden Knights were “doubling down” on their efforts to move the forward and free up cap space. The team is currently over the cap, but Vegas Golden Knights owner Bill Foley said not to believe the rumors.

Foley told KLAS-TV in comments that aired Wednesday, “We’re not shopping Patches [Pacioretty],” He did admit the team has salary cap issues and didn’t clarify on whether or not the team would trade the player if an interested suitor came calling, but he said, “he definitely is not being shopped.”

This flies in the face of comments by TSN who reported Tuesday that the Golden Knights wanted to free up some cap space, not only to solve their financial issues, but to go shopping in free agency with a few key players left on the board and at potential discounts. There was a lot of contention after the report from other media saying Vegas wasn’t interest in shedding the 32 goals and 66 points in 71 games last season that Pacioretty provided. Some suggested a player like Jonathan Marchessault might be on the move instead.

Pacioretty has three seasons remaining at $7 million per season and he wouldn’t exactly be the easiest player to trade based on how many teams have cap-related problems. But, as many as seven teams have been tossed around as potential trade landing spots if the Golden Knights are serious about a deal.

Remember, saying someone isn’t being shopped is not the same thing as suggesting you wouldn’t be willing to trade the asset. Sometimes money speaks louder than a team’s desire to keep someone in the system. If another NHL club made a trade offer that was almost too good to pass up and the Golden Knights were eager to gain more flexibility, Pacioretty could still be on the move.
