Flames News and Injury Updates: Monahan, Kylington, Gaudreau

There is both injury news and contract extension talk coming out of the Calgary Flames organization this week. What’s the latest?

The Calgary Flames and general manager Brad Treliving have confirmed that forward Sean Monahan will miss the remainder of the season after the organization and the player decided that hip surgery is the best course of action to take at this moment in time. Treliving said that Monahan was disappointed, but added he’s got a lot of time to get this taken care of and he’s expecting Monahan to be ready for training camp next season.

When asked how long Monahan might have been dealing with the injury, Treliving said he wasn’t aware of this being something that had been plaguing Monahan all season because the player often goes about his business and never complains. The GM noted that Monahan is the type of player who plays through a lot of stuff and just keeps it to himself. Ultimately, this was bothering him to the point that he told the team there was an issue. They got him checked out and it was determined it needed addressing.

Treliving said much of the criticism Monahan has received this season for a lack of production is unwarranted. The Flames have asked him to play a different role and Monahan “doesn’t bitch or complain. He doesn’t whine,” said Treliving. Instead, “It’s, ‘What can I do to help the team?’ That’s what Sean Monahan is all about.”

Monahan will stay close to the team during their playoff run as the organization feels he’s an important piece in their locker room.

More Injury News

Flames defenseman Oliver Kylington is day-to-day with an injury, while Calle Jarnkrok is out with a non-COVID illness. Both of these players are important for the Flames, but the team is in a good position with only a handful of games left in this season. Both should be fine for the postseason.

Johnny Gaudreau Contract Extension Talk

As per a report by Steve MacFarlane of Calgary Hockey Now, the Flames are very interested in extending star forward Johnny Gaudreau to a long-term extension but the more he scores this season, the more expensive a potential extension is going to be. Some are estimating he’s played so well this season (90 points in 65 games) that he’s put himself in the conversation for Hart Trophy talk. His salary could jump from a $6.75 million cap hit to a $10 million cap hit over eight years. At the age of 28, he’s looking for a long-term commitment.

The Flames are keeping quiet about the status of their negotiations with the forward. There was talk that Gaudreau was still being seen as a potential trade candidate all the way up to a couple of weeks before the NHL Trade Deadline. If accurate, that can only mean the organization is seriously concerned about what the cost might be to retain him.
