Flames Acquire Zadorov from Blackhawks in Trade

The Calgary Flames have acquired Nikita Zadorov from the Chicago Blackhawks just prior to free agency opening up.

The Chicago Blackhawks have confirmed they have made a trade just as NHL free agency opened up on Wednesday. They announced on their social media pages, we have acquired a 2022 third-round pick (Toronto’s pick) from Calgary in exchange for defenseman Nikita Zadorov. The third-rounder is the pick the Flames got from Toronto in the David Rittich deal.

As per @JFresh, Zadorov is an “all-defence physical blueliner who won’t do anything for you offensively and takes a lot of penalties but was a very good scoring chance suppressor this season.” He’s an adventure when he’s carrying the puck, but he’s sound defensively and will give the Flames a piece that will be tough to play against. Zadorov is a left shot defenseman with size, 6’6 and 235 lbs.

This is probably a move for the Blackhawks for salary cap reasons. At 26 years old, Zadorov is an RFA and it’s not clear what he’ll be looking for on a new extension. He’s owed a qualifying offer of $3.2 million.

Zadorov had one goal and eight points in 55 games with Chicago last season.

The Blackhawks have been a busy team in the past few days. They traded for defenseman Seth Jones and goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. It’s not clear what their plans are for the rest of the day.
