Elias Pettersson Talks Injury, Contract Negotiations with Canucks

Elias Pettersson spoke to media about his injury status as well as where he’s at with contract negotiations with the Vancouver Canucks.

Elias Pettersson says he’s not 100% healthy, but he’s looking forward to healing up and returning to the Vancouver Canucks next season, noting that he doesn’t think his contract negotiations with the team will be all that tricky and a deal will get done when both sides are happy.

Pettersson detailed when his injury happened, saying it was his second shift during a March 1st game against the Winnipeg Jets. Suggesting it was a weird set of circumstances that saw him get hurt, he was at the blue line, he mishandled the puck and his stick hit Nate Thompson’s shin pad and his wrist sort of whipped of Thompson’s shin. “It’s getting better, almost at 100% so no worries for next season.”

He called the injury frustrating because those types of things happen all the time in a hockey game and that he thought he might only be gone 4-6 weeks. That he’s still feeling the effects of the injury is annoying. “It is what it is, that’s hockey. Life happens. Injuries happen,” he said.

What About Pettersson’s Future with the Canucks?

As for his contract negotiations, Pettersson seemed confident a deal with the Canucks will happen. “This is where I want to play,” he said. He added, “I’m not stressed to sign a contract, it’ll take it’s time and be signed when both parties are happy. I’m excited to have it signed and look forward for the future.”

Pettersson was asked about a slower start to his season, he responded it’s not a feeling he wants to feel again but learned a lot from it. He’s not sure why he struggled and didn’t play his best, but it’s good learning to not always be on a high. You can learn from the lows. He says he’s completely driven to be one of the better players in the NHL.

Asked if he’s excited to see the Sedins come back to the organization, he agreed that it would be great to have two legends in the organization back in the fold. He also e said he was going back home during the offseason because he hasn’t been back home to Sweden in a while.
