Multiple reports are noting that a contract extension for head coach Travis Green is now done and the Vancouver Canucks will announce as much Friday afternoon when they hold a media conference. Pierre LeBrun reports: “Sounds like work on the deal went late into last night. As Dregs says, will be wrapped up today. Nice to see Travis Green getting re-signed and staying in Vancouver.” New deals for Green’s assistant coaches are also in the works.

The Canucks struggled this season but the one thing that remained consistent was the desire to keep coach Green in the fold. There was some concern that a deal wasn’t coming together, simply based on how long it was taking the two sides to get something done, but this news will be positive news for fans and management who knew Green would have been a strong candidate for other coaching vacancies around the NHL.
The Canucks were hit with the league’s biggest COVID spread which forced games to be postponed and the team to finish their own regular season well into the first round of this year’s playoffs. Green was among the group of Canucks who got sick. He also lost star forward Elias Pettersson in March to a wrist injury and the team dropped down the standings in a hurry. It was not the campaign the team was hoping for after a run in last season’s playoffs.
Green was the one bright spot on the campaign.
Players Comment on Green’s Coaching Style
Green first took as the Canucks’ coach during the 2017-18 season and he is popular among the fan base and his players, many of whom spoke out in support of him during the team’s end-of-season media availabilities. Bo Horvat said, “He’s been great towards me and he’s been great with the team, so we’d like to see him back for sure.” J.T. Miller added, “”He’s given me more opportunities than I could’ve ever asked for… We all wish they could be back,” Miller on Travis Green and the coaching staff.

Alex Edler noted:
“He came in set a good standard, a higher standard of what players need to do, and built more of a winning culture here. I think we’ve been getting better every year, not counting this year. He set the bar higher and held everyone accountable.”
