Oilers Waived Jujhar Khaira, Likely Hoping He’ll Be Claimed

The Edmonton Oilers waived Jujhar Khaira, among others, on Monday. The hope is he’ll be claimed so they can sign someone else.

The Edmonton Oilers were among many teams placing players on waivers Monday. Among the names the team decided to demote were Jujhar Khaira, Patrick Russell, Joakim Nygard, Anton Forsberg and Alan Quine. Khaira might be the most interesting name on the list.

On the surface, it’s a little surprising the Oilers elected to waive Khaira. He’s a potentially solid bottom-six player who can penalty kill, has size and can give a bit of depth scoring to the lineup. But, there’s likely a very valid reason the Oilers sent him down and it’s possible they’ll hoping he’ll be plucked off waivers by a team — something most insiders seem to think has a 50-50 shot of happening.

The Oilers signed Devin Shore to a PTO this offseason and speculation is they believe he can offer more than Khaira, who has been inconsistent with the Oilers over his entire stay. When Khaira is on, he’s effective, but when he’s not, he’s nearly invisible. The problem with that is, Khaira is a $1.2 million player while Shore will come in at a considerable cap savings for the hockey club.

At the same time, Shore can score, kill penalties and provide more consistency. This is a player that is not far removed from consecutive 30-point seasons.

What About Other Waiver Options?

If Khaira is claimed, the Oilers may have other options on waivers as well. More than 90 players were placed on waivers today, including names like Corey Perry, many of which might be of more use to Edmonton this season. A waiver claim isn’t as likely as perhaps signing Shore would be, but the Oilers can’t do much of anything with Khaira’s $1.2 million on the books.

With the additional cap space, Edmonton will have options if Khaira is claimed. It’s a solid plan and no harm move for the Oilers. If Khaira is not claimed, he can play on the team’s taxi squad.
