Depending on where you stand with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins as a permanent fixture with the Edmonton Oilers moving forward, there could be good news or bad news when it comes to his contract extension. TSN’s Ryan Rishaug is reporting that the two sides are set to resume contract extension talks, but that could either give the Oilers a good indication he’ll sign, or perhaps the hint they should try and move him.

Rishaug writes, “Sounds like the Oilers and RNH camp will resume talks in the next few days. Previous negotiations were back and forth in the $6 to 6.5 million dollar range on a long term deal when talks broke off.” The expectation is that talks will, once again, begin around this mark and depending on where things go, there could be news coming on a potential trade.

Rishaug noted a couple of days ago that Oilers GM Ken Holland said he spoke to the Nugent-Hopkins camp and update them on where the Oilers’ collective heads are at. The feeling was that Holland restated his position on the cautious approach he’s taking to any contract extension and that while the Oilers would like to keep Nugent-Hopkins in the fold, that his people need to take into account the new marketplace for free agents.

The hint here is that Holland might think the Nugent-Hopkins camp is overvaluing the player in a time where long and expensive contracts for free agents are going to be hard to come by. And, while he could potentially make more elsewhere, Holland is betting on the fact Nuge would like to stay with the Oilers.

What If a Deal Can’t Be Reached?

We’ve heard talk that the Oilers aren’t willing to sell high and move a player like Tyson Barrie to squeeze in Evan Bouchard. There’s not reason to believe the Oilers would move Nugent-Hopkins during the season either. He’s an important part of their playoff push.

But, if these latest rounds of talks don’t go well and there’s no ground made on a potential extension, will this signal the two sides not likely being able to get something done? They’ll be buzz of contract troubles and potential move, but we may not know anything concrete until after the NHL Expansion Draft.
