Edmonton and Oilers Hockey Icon Joey Moss Passes Away

Reports are surfacing on social media Monday evening that Edmonton hockey icon Joey Moss has passed away at the age of 57.

It is with sad news that we relay multiple reports that are surfacing on social media Monday evening that Hall of Fame dressing room attendant of the Oilers and Eskimos and Edmonton hockey icon Joey Moss has passed away at the age of 57. He was a legendary figure in Edmonton and our deepest condolences to the entire Moss family.

Those who knew Joey and worked with him for his extremely long run with the Oilers and Eskimos know how much he touched those around him. He was an unreal human being. He was an inspiration to many.

Moss was honored back in 2017 by the Professional Hockey Athletic Trainers Society (PHATS) and Society of Professional Hockey Equipment Managers (SPHEM) as a dressing room attendant and for his outstanding service and contributions to the Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club. But, he’ll be remembered not just for that, but for his extremely close friendship to Wayne Gretzky. Gretzky brought Moss into the Oilers organization and Moss stayed a staple by his side while the Great One was with the franchise, even long after.

He began working in the team’s dressing room in 1984-85 and his being born with Down’s syndrome never defined his tenure with the team. He was always helping others, including the training staff on a daily basis and he made sure to brighten everyone’s day from the start of training camp until the end of each season.

He is being remembered Monday evening by many on social media as they send out well wishes to his family and share stories of their time spent with him. This is a big loss for the Oilers, the city of Edmonton and for hockey.

R.I.P. Joey.

There’s a banner waiting to go up at Rogers Place with your name on it in Edmonton next season.
