Ducks Trade Mason McTavish to Blues for Two First-Round Picks
The Anaheim Ducks have officially made one of the biggest moves of the 2026 NHL Draft, trading forward Mason McTavish to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for the 15th and 29th overall selections.
The Ducks confirmed the trade Friday evening, ending McTavish’s tenure in Anaheim after establishing himself as one of the organization’s cornerstone young players. The 23-year-old center brought a rare combination of size, physicality, leadership, and offensive production, making him a key piece of the Ducks’ rebuilding effort over the past several seasons.
For the Blues, the acquisition represents a major investment in their future. McTavish immediately strengthens St. Louis down the middle and provides a proven young NHL center capable of playing in all situations. His hard-nosed playing style and ability to contribute offensively should fit seamlessly into the Blues’ identity as they look to return to Stanley Cup contention.
Anaheim, meanwhile, significantly boosts its draft capital by adding two first-round selections. General manager Pat Verbeek now owns the 15th and 29th overall picks, giving the Ducks additional flexibility to continue building through the draft or potentially package one or both selections in another trade before the first round concludes.
Moving McTavish is undoubtedly a bold decision for Anaheim, but it reflects the organization’s confidence in its growing prospect pool and long-term vision. The Ducks now have another opportunity to add high-end talent while maintaining financial flexibility for the future.

For St. Louis, acquiring an established young center instead of waiting on prospects is a clear signal that the organization intends to accelerate its retool. McTavish is already an impactful NHL player and still has plenty of room to develop into one of the league’s premier two-way forwards.
With one of the draft’s most surprising trades now official, both franchises have reshaped their futures in dramatically different ways. Whether Anaheim’s gamble on draft capital or St. Louis’ investment in proven talent pays off will be closely watched for years to come.
