Dubnyk to Get Long Look with Avalanche After Grubauer COVID News

Grubauer Dubnyk Avalanche

It’s a good thing Colorado Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic went out and added a goaltender at this year’s NHL Trade Deadline. It was already clear he needed depth at that position, but with Thursday’s news that starter Philipp Grubauer was added to the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol list, Devan Dubynk’s addition has become important. In fact, with a statement today from head coach Jared Bednar that all but confirmed Grubauer is positive for COVID-19, Dubnyk will get a long look.

Bednar said, ““It will be more than 14 days until he’s back wearing a jersey for us.” The hint here is that he’s either dealing with an injury as well, but more likely that he’s tested positive. As such, the team is left with Jonas Johansson and Dubnyk, who was just acquired from the San Jose Sharks. It is more likely that Dubnyk will be the goalie who sees more action.

The San Jose Sharks have struggled this season, as has Dubnyk. He recently said, “It’s been a while since my last win. Planning on those coming a little more frequently here.” He left the Sharks with a 3.18 goals against average and a .898 save percentage. Quite a few Avs fans were critical of the pickup because he’s played so poorly.

That said, some figured his struggles were because of his environment. He’s played in one game for the Avs now and earned a win, making 31 saves in the process. For Dubnyk, this will be a chance to prove the naysayers wrong. If he can play well over the next eight games, he could silence those who doubted him.

Grubauer Loss Is Major

The loss of Grubauer is big. He had a sparkling 2.00 GAA and .920 save percentage with 25 wins in 34 starts this season. He was on pace to be considered a candidate for the Vezina Trophy. The good news is, he’ll be back in time for the playoffs and the Avalanche have all but secured their spot at the top of the Honda West Division. At worst, if the Avs struggle without him, they let the Golden Knights overtake them for first.
