Dubas Not Bothered By Maple Leafs Choice to Wait on Extension

Kyle Dubas spoke with the media this week about his standing with the Toronto Maple Leafs as his contract as general manager is coming up at the end of this season. With a lack of playoff success experienced by the Leafs over the last number of seasons, Dubas’ job might be on the hot seat should Toronto not get into the postseason or through the first round of the playoffs.

Dubas said that he expects his players to be judged on the entirety of their work and he’s no different. With one more season on his current deal, he understands the need for the organization to wait until his entire run as GM is finished. If the team has success this season, he believes the contract situation will take care of itself. Should they not get to the point they want to be, it sounds like Dubas will understand if the team chooses to move on.

Dubas noted that he’s excited about the season and when asked why he decided not to sign an extension, he seemed to hint that this wasn’t his choice. “I don’t obviously decide what the organization wants to do…” He figures his situation will get taken care of without issue if the team he’s put together does what everyone expects they can do. He’s confident in the group and knows what they are capable of. He believes the team and the people in the organization are ready and the hope is that what this organization has envisioned to take place on the ice will play itself out.

There is some risk for the Maple Leafs if they choose not to move forward with Dubas as the GM. He’s done an admirable job and the team is in the early stages of negotiating one of the most important extensions in franchise history with Auston Matthews. What the team doesn’t want to do is risk upsetting their star player who just publicly came out and said Toronto feels like home to him.
