5 Potential Trade Destinations for Blue Jackets’ Dmitri Voronkov

The Columbus Blue Jackets could have an interesting decision to make regarding Dmitri Voronkov. The 26-year-old winger has struggled to begin the 2026–27 season, reportedly falling out of favour in Columbus and becoming a healthy scratch.

Despite his struggles, Voronkov remains an intriguing trade candidate. Standing 6-foot-5, he brings physicality, strong puck protection and legitimate scoring potential. With a $4.175 million cap hit and restricted free agency approaching in 2027, several teams could view him as a worthwhile change-of-scenery acquisition.

Here are five potential landing spots.

Montreal Canadiens

Montreal could be the most logical destination for Voronkov. The Canadiens possess an exciting young core but could benefit from additional size and physicality throughout their forward group.

Voronkov’s ability to win puck battles, create space and establish a net-front presence could complement Montreal’s skilled forwards, particularly Ivan Demidov.

Montreal has the organizational depth to complete a deal without sacrificing a cornerstone player, making the Canadiens arguably the strongest candidate.

Potential trade cost: A second-round pick and a mid-level prospect.

Edmonton Oilers

Edmonton’s lack of secondary scoring makes Voronkov an intriguing target, particularly with Zach Hyman injured.

Voronkov recorded 23 goals and 47 points during the 2024–25 season, demonstrating his ability to produce offensively. Playing alongside Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl could help him rediscover that production.

His physicality and net-front abilities would also provide Edmonton with another dimension offensively. However, Edmonton would likely need to move salary to accommodate his $4.175 million cap hit.

Potential trade cost: A second-round pick and prospect Beau Akey.

Vegas Golden Knights

Vegas has consistently pursued physically imposing forwards capable of contributing during the postseason.

Voronkov fits that identity perfectly. His combination of size, physicality and offensive upside could strengthen the Golden Knights’ middle six while providing another option around the crease. Vegas’ limited cap flexibility and prospect depth could complicate negotiations.

Potential trade cost: A second-round pick and a prospect, potentially involving an NHL roster player to balance salaries.

Utah Mammoth

Utah could offer Voronkov an opportunity to establish himself as a consistent top-nine contributor.

His physical presence would complement skilled forwards such as Logan Cooley and Clayton Keller, while his age fits Utah’s competitive timeline.

Unlike established contenders, Utah could afford to be patient with his development. Utah’s collection of young assets could make it an appealing trade partner for Columbus.

Potential trade cost: A second-round selection and a young forward or prospect.

Tampa Bay Lightning

Tampa Bay could benefit from another physically imposing winger capable of contributing offensively.

Voronkov’s ability to retrieve pucks and establish position around the net could complement the Lightning’s skilled forwards, potentially providing another option alongside Brayden Point. However, Tampa Bay’s cap situation would make acquiring Voronkov challenging without a corresponding move.

Potential trade cost: A second-round pick and a prospect or NHL-ready forward.

Most Likely Destination: Montreal Canadiens

Among these five teams, Montreal appears to be the strongest candidate. The Canadiens possess the assets, organizational flexibility and roster opportunity to make Voronkov a worthwhile addition.

Edmonton and Tampa Bay arguably have more immediate scoring needs, but salary-cap constraints complicate potential deals.

Ultimately, Columbus could prioritize acquiring a young NHL-ready player rather than draft picks alone. If the Blue Jackets decide a change of scenery is necessary, Montreal could offer the most realistic trade package.
