Did Ovechkin Just Tie a Bow on His NHL Career with 1,000 Goals?
Alex Ovechkin just scored his 1000th career NHL goal. Was this a fitting way to wrap his NHL run before he leaves the league?
Alex Ovechkin added another historic milestone to his legendary career on March 22, 2026, recording his 1,000th combined regular-season and playoff goal during the Washington Capitals’ matchup against the Colorado Avalanche.
The goal came on a trademark third-period power-play one-timer, tying the game 2-2. The Capitals ended up losing the game in overtime, but the afternoon still belonged to the Great 8.
Ovechkin becomes just the second player in NHL history to reach the mark, joining Wayne Gretzky, who holds the record with 1,016 combined goals. Now 40, the Capitals captain continues to defy age, further cementing his case as one of the greatest goal-scorers the game has ever seen.
As a pending UFA, many believe this could be his final season in the NHL and this was one of the few milestones he had left to reach to put a wrap on his career. The only thing left might be reaching 1000 goals in just the regular season. He would need 77 more, which would take at least a couple more years.
As questions about his future persist, this moment stands as another defining chapter in an already iconic career.

The Caps aren’t out of the playoff race, but they’re not a lock to make it either. Sitting outside of a wild card position, they’ll need at least five points to make up ground.
