“Late Entrant” Trying To “Suss Out” Logistics of J.T. Miller Trade
A few teams are reportedly talking to the Vancouver Canucks about a J.T. Miller trade, and a late entrant might be the New Jersey Devils.
“The New Jersey Devils have been a late entrant and have held talks with the Canucks on J.T. Miller,” Pierre LeBrun said on TSN’s “Insider Trading” on Tuesday. Noting that several teams have entered the trade discussions and the Vancouver Canucks are still working on things, he added, “I also think that internally, the Devils are trying to sort of suss out if it makes sense to go all-in on this or not at this point and where they are.”
However, Devils’ GM Tom Fitzgerald earlier denied having discussions with Vancouver on Sportsnet’s “Leafs Hour” on Thursday. Saying, “Patrik and I are really good friends, but quite honestly, we haven’t talked,” LeBrun’s report seems to suggest there’s been a late change of heart.
Why Are the Devils Getting Involved on Miller Now?
One of the reasons this situation may have changed is the rumored flexibility the Canucks now have in trying to make a deal. The Canucks need to get this trade done, and that means potentially being open to returns they initially weren’t excited about.
“The Canucks have relented a bit,” LeBrun reported. “They would do a futures deal with contenders like Carolina or New Jersey.”

If Fitzgerald knew that he was going to have to give up roster players, that could have been what kept him from having trade talks with Allvin. If he knows now that the Canucks are open to prospects and draft picks, the dynamic allows for New Jersey to become a player here.
How serious they get in these talks, if at all, remains to be seen.
