Where Did the Sudden Patrik Laine Rumor Wave Come From?

If you’ve noticed Patrik Laine‘s name popping up everywhere over the past few days, you’re not imagining things — but it’s also not entirely clear why he’s suddenly front-page news. Perhaps it’s the slow time of the season, and any relatively interesting story snowballs into a bigger deal than it is. Perhaps teams are finally realizing that there’s a market for the player. Maybe enough time has passed, and Laine is ready to make a decision. Whatever the case, Laine went from a non-story where maybe one team was interested to a big news item with as many as six teams kicking tires.

And it all started with one unconfirmed report.

The One Report Behind It All

Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette published an article earlier this month noting that since free agency opened July 1, Laine has been connected to the New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild, Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs, and, most recently, the Philadelphia Flyers. It was quite the change of pace from an original post by Stefen Rosner that the New York Islanders might have some interest in Laine on a PTO.

Zurkowsky’s report got picked up by a ton of outlets, and it’s been recirculating since. Then, once it was revealed that the Toronto Maple Leafs might be a fit, it’s clear to see why the news garnered even more attention. That’s how this kind of thing works. One little report that involves a very big and popular team, and suddenly it becomes headline fodder.

At the time of the Rosner post, all the Islanders were reportedly willing to offer was a professional tryout for the preseason, nothing guaranteed. Talks between Laine’s camp and the team hadn’t gotten very far. Fast forward three weeks and a five-team list looks like a completely different market than the one that previously existed.

Why Now, Specifically

Training camps are approaching fast, and lists like this tend to surface right around when teams have to actually decide whether to move. At the same time, Laine is going to be pressed into a decision. If the option is a PTO or a team-friendly, bonus-heavy deal, he might choose the latter. And, if word travels that he’s open to a low-base-salary contract because of how much time he missed last season, teams that weren’t in before might suddenly be open to the idea.

The Flyers angle is the clearest example of fit driving a report. Philadelphia finished dead last in power-play percentage last season, and Laine’s value has always run almost entirely through the man advantage — 15 of his 20 goals in a shortened 2024-25 season with Montreal came on the power play. Of course, the idea of Laine with Rick Tocchet might leave some people questioning the fit. Toronto’s version of the same logic is even more obvious: pairing Laine with Auston Matthews, the No. 1 pick in the same draft where Laine went second overall, is the kind of storyline that writes itself.

At this point, it’s safe to assume the interest is real. How much remains to be seen. For some, this is all about the lowest, nearly risk-free fit they can find. For others, they might see Laine as a piece that can help. And are there more teams involved in this than we know? Daniel Genest noted that Laine has been training with Florida Panthers players, including his fellow Finn and close friend Aleksander Barkov.

The Concern About Laine

The winger hasn’t finished a full season since 2018-19. That’s something one or all of these five teams will be weighing.

Rangers fans see the most straightforward fit; Flyers fans are skeptical. Leafs fans, meanwhile, are already deep into hypothetical bottom-six shuffling, debating who’d need to be moved to clear a roster spot if Toronto actually lands him.

Laine’s market hasn’t actually exploded — it’s just gotten organized. Five teams’ worth of quiet interest finally got compiled into one report, and the approach of training camp is creating an interest in his future that wasn’t there just weeks ago. The real question isn’t really which team wants him; multiple clearly do. It’s whether any of them are willing to bet a roster spot on him.
