Dallas Stars Sign Jason Robertson to 4-Year Extension

The Dallas Stars have signed Jason Robertson to a four-year extension worth $7.75 million per season.

There was late-night news on Wednesday coming out of Dallas as the Stars confirmed they had signed forward Jason Robertson to a four-year extension worth $7.75 million per season. Kevin Weekes posted a tweet in the morning that fans should keep an eye on the situation. By the end of the evening, Robertson was posting, “Let’s go @DallasStars.”

It was reported earlier in the day that the Stars and Robertson’s camp were having ongoing discussions and that there might have been a major shift if the Stars wanted to have him ready for the opening of the season. Darren Dreger of TSN had reported, “Still time to get something done.” Clearly, he wasn’t wrong. Robertson is one of the NHL’s elite young forwards and it’s a good deal for the Stars who know they are getting some time with a player who is already producing at an incredible level but continues to develop. The downside for the Stars is that they’ll have to pay handsomely at a time the cap will be much higher than it is now. Robertson will want to get paid.

To some, this deal represents a signing that is way under market value. The key here for Robertson is that it puts him in a position to stay an RFA when this deal is done. At the age of 27, he’ll have a chance to sign a huge long-term deal should he keep trending upward.

Stars GM Jim Nill said Robertson is expected to be on the ice with the Stars for practice on Friday and the plan is to fly to Dallas tomorrow, do his medicals Friday morning, and then hit the ice. Dallas has one preseason game left and it will take place on Saturday against the Minnesota Wild. That doesn’t give the forward a lot of time to get acquainted with new head coach Pete DeBoer’s system.
