Crosby and Malkin Respond to News of Ovechkin’s NHL Retirement

Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin addressed the Ovechkin retirement news, making comments on Monday morning about the superstar.

Following the announcement by Alex Ovechkin that this would be final season in the NHL, players around the NHL were asked for their thoughts. In Pittsburgh, where Ovechkin had rivalries with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, both showed their respect.

“I mean, he’s done everything,” said Evgeni Malkin on Monday morning. “He’s played like, for 22 years. It’s not easy, same like myself. Maybe it’s my last year, too. I still love this game, but again, it’s not easy to play every game, every night. It’s hard, because he’s like legend, fans love him.”

Malkin noted that he hopes Ovechkin has a solid season and stays healthy, scores a lot of goals, and enjoys the game. He recalled last season when there was a thought that Ovechkin might retire, Malkin took photos with his countryman and said he remembered it fondly. He noted that he will likely take pictures with Ovechkin again, knowing this time it’s for real.

“It’s always fun to play against Washington, against him.

Crosby said that he was glad Ovechkin got to make the announcement instead of being hammered by questions about it all season. “Enjoy playing and focus on hockey.” He talked about their legendary battles over the years and noted that, at their age, they have to start making these kinds of decisions. “As long as he’s happy and enjoying it, that’s the biggest thing.”

Crosby commented on the relationship as rookies and how they were kind of built up against each other before they even met. Both were extremely competitive, and both wanted to be the best. In that environment, it was tough for the two to get close as friends. Their playoff matchups and history as on-ice competitors made them adversaries more than friends. “I think over the years, obviously, I’ve developed a friendship with him I have a ton of respect for him. If you play against someone that long and you’re compared to each other enough, I think that’s something that builds over time.”

Crosby and Malkin clearly respect Ovechkin, as do many around the NHL. Plenty of additional comments from stars around the league will follow the news. There will also be times this season when players will want to say their own personal goodbyes to the NHL superstar.
