Could a Waiver-Wire Pickup Be the Canucks’ Answer in Net?

Leevi Meriläinen had himself a real night against Calgary, the kind of performance that’s hard to ignore. The Flames generated 2.07 expected goals against him, and he only coughed up one, good for a 1.07 GSAx, meaning he essentially stole about a goal that an average goalie probably wouldn’t have. And he wasn’t out there single-handedly bailing everyone out either. Vancouver brought real defensive structure in front of him, keeping Calgary to just three high-danger chances all night.

Here’s the fun part. This goalie came in a waiver-wire pickup from Ottawa, not some big trade or splashy free-agent signing. Way too early to say whether this is the start of something real or just a one-off good night, but for a rebuilding Canucks team still figuring out who they are, finding a quietly reliable goalie nobody expected much from is exactly the kind of story worth watching all season.

Which Oilers Defenseman Could Get Dealt for Forward Help?

Edmonton’s reportedly shopping around for a forward, and according to Elliotte Friedman, they’re willing to flip a depth defenseman to get there. Three names keep popping up: Ty Emberson, Spencer Stastney, and Shakir Mukhamadullin, all cheap depth guys making under $2 million. Emberson’s actually been a quiet bright spot lately, steady and reliable in a much tighter defensive game, while Mukhamadullin’s struggled early with a minus-6 rating despite the coaching staff still liking his size and upside. Stastney, meanwhile, hasn’t even played yet this season and might just be the easiest to move if Edmonton sees him purely as emergency depth.

The good news for Edmonton is there’s no real urgency here. They’re sitting atop the NHL standings with five points in three games, and injured forwards Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins are both expected back soon anyway. So while a trade could still happen, it sounds like Edmonton’s shopping from a position of strength rather than desperation, which usually means better leverage at the table.

Is There a Team USA Trade-Request Connection — Or Just Coincidences?

A viral thread raised an interesting question. Why do so many recent NHL trade requests trace back to Team USA’s gold-medal roster? Tkachuk, Hellebuyck, Larkin, Werenski, Hughes – the list is long and strangely tied to that one Olympic team, leading some fans to wonder if the players bonded over shared frustrations during the tournament and basically motivated each other to push for what they wanted. It’s a fun theory, and the timing really is weird, especially since previous Team Canada rosters never produced anything close to this kind of wave.

But dig a little deeper and the explanations get messier and more individual than one tidy conspiracy. Hughes and Tkachuk both wanted to play with their brothers, long before the Olympics ever happened. Werenski hasn’t actually requested a trade. He’s just been noncommittal. Larkin and Hellebuyck both seem to have real, separate issues with their own organizations that have nothing to do with the tournament. And notably, Auston Matthews, the team’s actual captain, seems totally content staying in Toronto. So while the pattern is genuinely eye-catching, it’s probably more coincidence and individual frustration than some secret locker room pact, even if it makes for a great story either way.
